Jenison, Mich. - The Jenison boys water polo team has announced the hiring of new head coach Jason Sweedyk.
"I'm beyond excited to be coming back to my alma mater - a place I played at and coached at for almost 20 years," Sweedyk said. "This is surreal to me having played for Pete [Hewett] and being his assistant for all those years to finally try and fill those same shoes. Excited is too small of an adjective - but I am humbled more than anything."
Sweedyk has a long history with the Michigan Water Polo Association. He played for the Wildcats from 1992-94 where he was an All-Stater. He returned to Jenison after graduating from Central Michigan in 2000 from 2000-02 to assist for both the girls and boys programs and stayed on with the boys until 2003.
He then guided East Grand Rapids as the bench boss from 2004-06 before returning to Jenison as an assistant from 2007-2013.
With the hiring, former boys head coach Spencer Sanders has transitioned to girls water polo head coach for the Wildcats, a vacancy left when Nicole Vos stepped down at the end of 2021. Sanders also assisted with the girls program while guiding the boys over the last several seasons.
