Boys Week 5 Top Ten

The MWPA's Week 5 Boys Rankings are here after a busy week. With District play coming up in most districts, check out where our top ten falls today.

#1 Hudsonville Eagles

Their only loss is a previously unrecorded late August out-of-state game. Against Michigan, they're a perfect 23-0 this season and 12-0 against top ten teams. They've in fact played the most top ten games (tied with Jenison) in the state with 12 this season. Josh Ahrendt's Eagles get district games with #9 Grand Haven as well as West Ottawa this week, as well as the potential for a 1-vs.-2 Match Up with Jenison next Monday should the rankings hold.

#2 Jenison Wildcats

They just keep taking care of business. They fought off four fairly close games this weekend, topping current #9 Grand Haven, two Illinois schools, and #6 Ann Arbor Skyline in a one goal game. Jason Sweedyk's J-Cats have a top ten game on the slate (#10 Zeeland) as they open up more of their district schedule this week with two tilts.

#3 Rockford Rams

A perfect 6-0 week for Craig Peterman's Rams is just what the doctor ordered. They took down a current top ten team by double digits, doubled up Ann Arbor Skyline, and cruised through the rest of their weekend tournament action, adding a pair of out-of-state victories to finish it off. They have a top ten contest with #7 East Grand Rapids looming tonight as their district play gets into full swing.

#4 Ann Arbor Pioneer Pioneers

It's almost understated how the Pioneer's handled themselves last week - more than doubling #8 Birmingham Groves and nearly doubling #6 Ann Arbor Skyline in district play. Don Packard's Pioneers had one of the state's toughest schedule's last week and didn't seem to blink as they continue their September surge. A really interesting match-up lies ahead with #5 Birmingham Seaholm tomorrow night.

#5 Birmingham Seaholm Maples

The Maples certainly are off to a fine start, but a meat-grinder of a month awaits Josh Stephens' squad in late September-October. They get a chance to prove themselves tomorrow, hosting #4 Ann Arbor Pioneer, they travel a little over a mile up the road next week to see rival Groves, and then have a week hosting Huron and visiting Pioneer after that. We're going to learn a lot about the Mapes pretty quick here.

#6 Ann Arbor Skyline Eagles

Without question, no one played a tougher week than the Eagles. #1, #2, #3, #4, a strong Illinois based New Trier and Dexter. Though the Eagles took their lumps, they are really just getting going after a quiet September. Expect to see them make strides in the coming week as Ashley Hower's squad is finally a little more battle tested after last week. Bear in mind, they JUST played #2 Jenison to a one-goal loss. There's plenty in this team we haven't yet seen.

#7 East Grand Rapids Pioneers

They opened up the week with #1 Hudsonville. It may not have gone their way, but they rebounded nicely with wins over East Lansing and Zeeland (now ranked) as they head into the meat of their district schedule. Raheem Brown's Pioneers get a trip to #3 Rockford tonight to try and make a leap up the ladder.

#8 Birmingham Groves Gators

After missing a few weeks, the Gators got back into action with a top four opponent (#4 Pioneer), and took a loss, before rebounding for a key district win as they try to catch their rivals up the road. They Gators have Lake Orion and Walled Lake this week before hosting rival Seaholm in District action. George Googasian's Gators are in need of a good week to position themselves to leapfrog the Maples by next week.

#9 Grand Haven Buccaneers

Had it come a few days later, the Buccaneers would have had a top ten victory as they defeated Zeeland to wrap up the Hudsonville-Zeeland tournament last weekend. That said, Grand Haven went 3-2 with a one-goal loss to CPD (Illinois). Bill Hamm's Bucco's continue to float in this zone in large because they play most everyone tough, and rarely have fallen to teams behind them.

#10 Zeeland Polo

Despite Zeeland's tough week, they did see three top ten teams, but they continue to draw closer to the 7-9 range it seem's every time they play one of them. Zac Geschwendt's Z's have key district match ups with West Ottawa and #2 Jenison this week as they try to position themselves favorably in a district they share with with the #1, #2 and #9 ranked teams.

On the Line: Dexter, (64), Ann Arbor Huron (58), Ann Arbor Huron (31)

Understanding the Poll: The poll, open to all MWPA Head Coaches, is ranked via a point-percentage scoring model. The points column is percentage of points scored by voters against the maximum total, which is based on number of voters. The period that would signify percentage has been dropped off the beginning of each number.

Unanimous first place ranking nets a score of 1,000 points.

Coaches vote weekly during the season. Polls will be updated Monday afternoons at 3 pm ET. Inquiries on the poll can be directed to the chat feature on the MWPA website. Answering times may vary.
